I hate makeup trends.
There, I said it.
Yes, I am a makeup artist and “influencer”. I’m still trying on that second one. I love makeup and trying new things. I love creating content around products and techniques and themes.
But, I hate trends.
Why?
Well first, the content becomes so saturated so quickly online. If you don’t jump on the trend with a hot take, best sound, or smoothest transitions – it’s really hard to get noticed.
Next, products sell out so fast! I’m not big enough yet to get PR boxes, which means I have to buy all my own products. Not complaining about that, again, I love makeup. But I only need so many pink setting powders.
Let me give you an example on that one - last year I had my friend Carter run up to the Ulta in Fort Collins to grab the new ELF Dunkin’ release for me. Don’t worry, he offered. But they didn’t have the full collection in the store and I missed the online release. So I missed out on the cute straw brushes. Not gonna lie, still bummed about that. When Halo Glow released, I set alarms and was on the site every ten minutes. So yes, I got that release and it is 100% worth the hype.
And finally, trends are just that, trends. As soon as I start feeling comfortable with something new – it isn’t in style anymore. 2016 glam, anyone?
But that’s okay. Because I love makeup. And I love creating content. I just wish others could love my content too.
Hours every week spent engaging on social media, trying new products, researching trends, recording, editing, uploading...only for 200 views, if I’m lucky.
So, that’s where I am right now. On a Saturday morning in a coffee shop in Windsor, Colorado. Uploading the videos for the week ahead and emailing brands trying to get some visibility. I don’t want to give this up - but eventually I am going to have to decide if I am going to pursue my “real job” at Home Depot or make this makeup thing happen. Or maybe go after something else entirely.
I just don’t know where the next step is going to take me. Maybe this next video will be the one to go viral.
And maybe I will just sit here staring out the window drinking my iced latte. Who knows.
At least my lipstick looks good.
Bye babes. Chat soon.
