My first geeky Halloween

A blog post from Sasha Loves Lipstick by Nikki Grant.

Blog post, October 10

Okay, so, I'm doing something a bit outside of my comfort zone for Halloween this year. Most of you know that I have been dating Matt for a little while, and he is hosting our friend group for Halloween at his house. He's definitely my secret geeky guy. He's subtle with it, but loves superheroes - especially Marvel. Hence the outside my comfort zone note.

I want to do a cosplay of one of the female Marvel characters. I don't want to do a straight-up costume, probably more "Disney-bound" style so that way it's inspired by that character, but I can wear the pieces of my outfit separately too.

I need suggestions for who you think I could pull off and then I'll start working on getting my outfit together. I definitely need help here!

Now that I've gotten that mini blog post up, I need to start figuring out some ideas on my own. The geeky side of things can be so overwhelming, but I really want to surprise Matt with this for Halloween. I'm just getting ready to pull up some Google searches when there's a light knock on my door. I turn to find Kylie leaning against the door frame, holding two of our coffee mugs.

"Hey Sash, what are you working on? I thought you were taking today off from content?" she asks me as she comes into my room and sits on the edge of the bed after handing me one of the mugs that smells like literal heaven. I take a sip of the coffee and and do an internal happy dance. We picked up some additional syrups for the fall season and having some new at home coffee combos has definitely been fun.

"Yeah, I am taking today off," I close my laptop and turn my desk chair so I'm facing Kylie. "I just wanted to get a little blog post up and then start working on the inspiration for my Halloween costume. Do you and Carter have a plan yet?"

"Not yet. He mentioned wanting to do a couples costume, but we haven't really worked on ideas yet. I think we are going to have a stay home dinner date tomorrow when you and Ashley have your meeting and go over it then."

"That will be good. I know it's been a little busy with his additional hours and responsibilities at the restaurant."

"So, what are the options for you for your costume?" Kylie pivots the conversation back to me as she drags one leg up onto the bed so she can get more comfortable on the little space still open from my pillows and extra blankets.

"I want to do a superhero inspired something. Not a full actual costume, more like inspiration. I don't want to do Spider-Man though. I know it's Matt's favorite, but wearing that bold of a blue and red just isn't going to be my best move. And I don't know how I can make that into something I would enjoy wearing, ya know?" I take another sip of my coffee and then set my mug down before walking over to my bed and moving some things out of the way so I can sit up against my headboard and bury my legs under one of my throw blankets. I like being closer to whoever I'm talking to even though the space from my desk to my bed isn't that far.

"Is there a female version of Spider-Man that has a less severe costume choice?"

"Oooh, that's a good idea. Let me check," back to Google I go, just on my phone this time. The smile on my face is instant, "This may actually work and I don't even think I need to go shopping anywhere other than my closet." I turn my phone to Kylie and she doesn't even hesitate.

"Oh, he's gonna love that!"

Blog Post, October 31

Well, tonight is the night! Thank you all for your outfit and makeup suggestions. I think my version of Spider Gwen is going to be perfect. I have about thirty minutes before I need to start getting ready so I wanted to come check in real quick to see how your Halloween prep is coming. I know many of you went with the superhero inspiration this year too. Make sure you tag me in your posts tonight so I can see what you ended up with.

And on a different note, today may be the last day of our Pink Every Day focus, but I hope that you will continue to support these businesses. And who knows, maybe we will be able to do more with this initiative in the coming weeks.

Don't forget to set your favorite lippie when you head out tonight! Unless the smudged look is part of your costume.

I give myself one more spray of my setting spray before deciding that I am sufficiently ready for tonight. I am very comfortable with who I am and how I look. But tonight, I look hot. Matt is going to lose it when he sees me. And I'm just crossing my fingers that he knows who I'm supposed to be tonight. He had asked me a few times what I'm doing for my costume tonight, but I just told him that he would have to be surprised for once. I grab my purse and my overnight bag and head to the main space of our apartment.

"If I knew how to properly wolf whistle, I would be doing one right now. Holy cow, girl. You're like the perfect mix between gothic femme and superhero chic." Kylie practically squeals at me when I make it to the living room.

"I don't even know what that is supposed to mean," I laugh at her while I fill up my water bottle at the sink. "I just know that I am once again convinced that I will never get lash extensions done, it's so weird being able to actually see my lashes when I'm just looking at things."

"I get that. And I don't know what it means either, I just really like how the whole look came together. Have you sent Matt any pictures or hints?"

"Nope. I want to get his initial reaction in person when I get over there. I'm going to head over a bit early so I can help out and drop off my things before everyone else arrives."

"So, you're bringing an overnight bag?" She asks in a very knowing tone that only several years of friendship can bring.

"Yep, don't be late. I'll see you in a bit." I wink at her on my way out the door, stopping for just a moment to tell Matt that I am on my way.
